Software Developer within Energy Management Systems (EMS)
Develop **C/C++ software** that optimizes energy onboard vessels and helps shape the future of electrified shipping.
Software Developer – Energy Management Systems (EMS)
📍 Hönö, Gothenburg | Berg Propulsion
Would you like to develop software that contributes to the future of electrified and energy-efficient shipping? We are looking for a Software Developer within Energy Management Systems (EMS) who wants to work at the intersection of software, automation, power electronics, and marine technology.
At Berg Propulsion, you will develop solutions that manage and optimize electrical energy and power onboard vessels. You will be part of an experienced development team and have the opportunity to follow your work throughout the entire process – from system design and programming to testing and commissioning onboard.
About Berg Propulsion
Berg Propulsion develops propulsion and energy solutions for the global marine industry, with a strong focus on innovation, technical excellence, and more efficient and sustainable shipping.
At our Hönö site, engineers from different disciplines work closely together to develop complete solutions for the vessels of the future. Software is becoming an increasingly important part of our systems, particularly as electrification and the use of battery and energy storage solutions continue to grow.
About the Role
As a Software Developer within Energy Management Systems, you will contribute to the development of our next generation of onboard energy and power management solutions.
Your main focus will be software development in C and C++ in a Linux environment, but the role extends well beyond programming. You will work throughout the entire development lifecycle – from requirements, system design, and architecture to implementation, integration, testing, validation, and troubleshooting.
Our systems interface with battery systems, power electronics, propulsion systems, and other onboard control systems. This means you will work closely with software, hardware, and the complete system, giving you the opportunity to see how your solutions perform in real-world operation.
You will join a software team of approximately 17 developers with different levels of experience and technical specializations. You will also collaborate closely with engineers within automation, electrical systems, propulsion, and systems engineering, as well as colleagues across R&D, Contract, and Production.
In this role, you will:
Develop and maintain software for Linux-based Energy Management Systems.
Design and implement functionality in C and C++.
Help shape how our systems and their functions are designed and operate.
Develop interfaces and communication with battery systems, power electronics, and other onboard systems.
Contribute to system architecture and software design.
Perform software and system testing, verification, and validation.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues.
Develop and maintain HMI functionality and system interfaces.
Contribute to test environments, simulation, and automated testing.
Support integration and commissioning in laboratory environments and onboard vessels.
Contribute technical expertise to the development of future energy and power management solutions.
The role may involve international travel to shipyards, vessels, customers, and partners in connection with integration, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Automation, Electrical Engineering, or another relevant technical field.
We are open to different technical backgrounds – your expertise and understanding of software development and complex systems are what matter most.
Technical Knowledge
We are looking for someone with:
Strong knowledge of C and/or C++.
Experience developing in a Linux environment.
A good understanding of software design, debugging, and testing.
Knowledge of version control and modern software development practices.
Professional proficiency in English.
Experience or knowledge in one or more of the following areas is considered an advantage:
Energy Management Systems (EMS), Battery Management Systems (BMS), or Power Management Systems (PMS).
Battery systems, power electronics, converters, or electrical power systems.
Industrial communication protocols and network-based control systems.
Embedded or real-time software development.
Control systems and automation.
HMI development.
System and software architecture.
Simulation, automated testing, or Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL).
Experience
Experience in professional software development using C and/or C++.
Experience working in Linux-based development environments.
Experience with testing, debugging, and problem-solving in software systems.
Experience with system testing, validation, troubleshooting, marine propulsion systems, vessel automation, or other maritime systems is considered an advantage.
Ideally, you have a few years of relevant professional experience, but we do not have a specific requirement regarding the number of years. Your technical expertise, potential, and ability to contribute in the role are more important.
Swedish language skills are an advantage but not a requirement.
Skills and Competencies
We are looking for someone who is able to:
Develop robust and reliable software for complex technical systems.
Understand the interaction between software, hardware, and complete systems.
Analyze and troubleshoot complex technical issues in a structured way.
Work throughout the entire development lifecycle – from requirements and design to implementation, testing, and integration.
Take ownership of technical topics and drive them forward independently.
Collaborate across engineering disciplines and contribute to shared technical solutions.
Share knowledge and communicate technical topics clearly and effectively.
Personal Qualities
To succeed in this role, we believe you are:
Analytical and solution-oriented, with a genuine interest in understanding why problems occur and finding sustainable solutions.
Independent and accountable, with the ability to take initiative and drive your work forward.
Communicative and collaborative, and comfortable working with people across different disciplines, backgrounds, and areas of expertise.
Structured and goal-oriented, with the ability to take technical challenges from problem to solution.
Curious and technically minded, with an interest in understanding the complete system and how its different components interact.
A team player who values knowledge sharing and contributes to the development of the team as a whole.
You enjoy having ownership and freedom in your work while seeing collaboration as a natural part of developing strong technical solutions.
What We Offer
At Berg Propulsion, you will have the opportunity to develop software that has a direct impact on real systems onboard vessels. You can follow your work from the first technical decisions and lines of code, through testing and integration, all the way to a system operating in the field.
You will be part of an experienced development team with both junior and senior colleagues, in a culture where collaboration, technical curiosity, and knowledge sharing are important parts of how we work.
The role offers a high degree of ownership and the opportunity to influence technical solutions and future systems. You will work in an environment where software, automation, electrical engineering, energy systems, and marine technology come together to solve real-world technical challenges.
